  • Sterilization: This is the first step in Palm oil processing. This process helps to remove enzymes from the palm fruit. It is done through high temperature, the high temperature also softens the palm fruit and makes it easier for threshing and also helps not to damage the palm fruit.
  • Threshing: this is the next step in Palm oil processing whereby the palm fruit are separated from the bunch. In big palm oil mill they place the palm fruit in big rotary drum to separate the palm fruit while in small palm oil mill they are done by hand.
  • Digesting: this is the next step after the threshing, in this step the palm fruits is put in the diester which removes the nuts and then boils the palm fruits.
  • Pressing: this is the next step after the the digesting, in this step heavy metal plates are pressed into the palm fruit to squeeze out the oil.

After this step, the palm oil is diluted with water and then filtered through a screen to remove impurities and debris that may be in it. The palm oil can be sold like that after this process or can be sent on for further processing.

States with the best Palm Oil in Nigeria

Nigeria is one of the highest producers of Palm oil in Africa and these are some the states that contribute to the production of this palm oil:

  • Akwa Ibom State: This state is located in the southern part of Nigeria and is one of Nigeria’s highest palm oil producing state. This is because they have a favourable climate which helps in the growth of the raw materials in Palm oil production.
  • Delta State: This is another high palm oil producing state in Nigeria, it produces most of the palm oil used in the country.
  • Rivers State: This another high palm oil producing state in Nigeria. It is part of the reasons Nigeria is one of the highest palm oil producing country in Africa.
  • Imo State: This another high palm oil producing state in Nigeria is located in the eastern part of Nigeria. They are also big players in Palm oil production in Nigeria.

In Edo state, a litre of palm oil is currently sold at 1,700 naira while at Ibadan, it’s sold at 2,300 naira per litre.
