The average price of basket of tomatoes in Nigeria depends on the quantity and location. Tomatoes are cheaper to buy in the northern part of Nigeria. In Lagos, it’s cheaper at Mile 12 market. They are very cheap in Jos, which is located in the middle belt part of Nigeria. It’s cheaper to buy tomatoes in Jos than in Abuja and Lagos.

Many people who sell tomatoes in wholesale in Mile 12 market in Lagos buy tomatoes in large quantities from Jos. In the Southern part of Nigeria, a basket of tomatoes costs twice the price in Jos due to high cost of transportation.

Highest Tomato Producing States in Nigeria

Taraba: Taraba is part of the middle belt and they produce tomatoes in a very large quantity. Bulk buyers from the eastern Nigeria travel thousands of kilometers to get to Taraba state just to buy cheap tomatoes.

Other states that are known for large tomatoes production in the Northern and middle belt of Nigeria include: Bauchi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kaduna, Sokoto and Gombe states.

Tomatoes Packaging and Transportation

If you want to transport tomatoes from one place to the other, always bear in mind that tomatoes is an agricultural products that deteriorates very fast. You must handle it very well else, you’ll lose millions in the cause of transportation. Transporting such a fragile agro product requires proper handling.

Tomatoes don’t like heat and cannot survive in certain temperatures. During transportation to a long distant journey, make sure you use an open van, or a cooler van that’s sealed with air conditioner.

When using the open van, make sure you insulate the base and sides of the van to avoid direct contact with the tomatoes. Use fresh leaves from the bush as insulation. Don’t forget to make the insulation thick enough. You can consider making it the thickness to be at least 0.3 meters when compressed.

Mile 12 market is a very popular market located in Mile 12 area of Lagos Nigeria. The market is very close to Ojota and ketu markets. Lagosians go to Mile 12 market to buy tomatoes in large quantity because all fresh tomato wholesalers offload their trucks of tomatoes at Mile 12 market.
At Mile 12 market, there’s a small basket and a big basket. A small basket of tomatoes contains 5 paint rubber buckets while a big basket of tomatoes contains 10 paint rubber buckets of tomatoes. A small basket of tomatoes weighs 20kg to 25kg while a big basket weighs between 40kg to 52kg.
In Lagos Mile 12 market today February 14th 2025, the average price of a basket of a small basket of tomatoes across different sellers is ₦22,000 while a big basket costs ₦40,000 in same market.
Note: Be very mindful when you are buying a basket of tomatoes at Mile 12 market, this is because from my own experience, the pack bad tomatoes under some baskets and put good tomatoes on top to cover the bad tomatoes under. So check every basket very well before you buy.

For those who want to buy in large quantity (up to 500 to a thousand basket), it’s advisable to buy from the north and the middle belt, while for those who want to just buy maybe between one basket and 20 baskets, you can get that from mile 12 markets.
If you’re buying small quantity and you want to order from the north, the cost of transporting it might drain all you profits away.
